Marrakech to Merzouga: How to Get There, Distance, Time and Best Routes
How to get from Marrakech to Merzouga and the Sahara: distance, travel time, the scenic route via Ait Benhaddou and Dades, transport options and practical tips.
Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is one of the most rewarding places in Morocco, but it is also far from Marrakech. The distance is roughly 560 kilometers, and the drive takes around nine to ten hours without stops. This guide explains your options, the best routes, and how to plan the journey so that it is part of the adventure and not just a long day in the car.

The short answer
There is no quick way to reach Merzouga. Most travelers do it by road, in a private car with a driver, on a guided multi-day tour, or in a rental car. The most popular choice is a three-day trip with an overnight stop on the way, a night in a desert camp, and a return to Marrakech or a continuation to Fes.
| Option | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Private driver or guided tour | 2 to 3 days | Comfort, stops and local advice |
| Rental car | 2 to 3 days | Flexibility, confident drivers |
| Bus | Very long journey | Tight budgets, plenty of time |
| Regional flight to Errachidia | Shorter, flights are limited | Saving road time, then a transfer |
The classic route: Marrakech, Ait Benhaddou, Dades and Merzouga
This is the most scenic way to go, and the one used by most multi-day tours. It crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, passes through the film-famous kasbah country and then drops into the desert.

Day 1: Marrakech to the Dades Valley
Leave Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n’Tichka pass, one of the highest roads in Morocco, with winding bends and big views. Stop at the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, then continue through Ouarzazate toward the Dades Valley, where you can spend the night. It is a long day, but the scenery changes constantly.
Day 2: Dades and Todra to Merzouga
Take time in the morning for the Dades or Todra gorges, with their tall rock walls. Then continue east to Merzouga, arriving in the afternoon. The highlight is a camel trek into the dunes at sunset, followed by dinner and a night in a desert camp under the stars.

Day 3: Sunrise and the way back
Wake up for the sunrise over the dunes, have breakfast at the camp, and begin the return. Many travelers drive back to Marrakech in a single long day, while others continue north to Fes, which makes a good loop through the country.
The faster route via Midelt
If you are short on time, you can take a more direct route through the Middle Atlas, passing by Midelt and the Ziz valley. It saves some time, although it is less varied than the southern route. It is often used for the return journey or for traveling between Fes and Merzouga.
Other ways to get there
Bus: long-distance buses serve the Merzouga area, but the journey is very long, so check current schedules and plan extra time.
Flight: a regional airport at Errachidia, about an hour and a half from Merzouga, has limited domestic flights. Check availability for your dates and arrange a transfer for the last stretch.
Rental car: a good choice if you are comfortable with mountain roads. Start early, avoid driving after dark, and keep the fuel tank full, as stations can be far apart.
How many days do you need?
Three days is a good minimum for the round trip from Marrakech, because the distances are long and the best moments are at sunset and sunrise. With four days you can slow down, add the gorges and a second night in the desert. If you only have one or two days, the Agafay desert near Marrakech is an easier option. Practical tips
- Start early on the first day, so you are not crossing the mountains in the dark.
- Bring motion-sickness remedies if you are sensitive, as the Atlas roads are winding.
- Carry some cash for small villages, cafes and tips.
- Pack a warm layer, sun protection and a scarf for the desert.
- Check the season first: read our guide on the best time to visit Morocco.
