3 Days in Marrakech: The Perfect Itinerary
A practical 3-day Marrakech itinerary: the medina and souks, palaces and gardens, plus a day trip to the Agafay desert, the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira.
Three days is a good amount of time to get to know Marrakech. It lets you explore the old medina, see the main palaces and gardens, and still have a day for something different outside the city. This itinerary is built around short, realistic days, with time to rest in the heat and enjoy the evenings, when the city is at its best.

Day 1: The medina and the souks
Start in the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the streets are still quiet. Begin near the Koutoubia Mosque and admire its minaret from the outside, then walk toward Jemaa el-Fnaa, the famous square at the heart of the medina.
- Morning: walk through the souks north of Jemaa el-Fnaa, looking at leather, spices, lanterns and textiles. Agree on prices before you buy.
- Midday: visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa, a beautifully decorated former Islamic college, then lunch in a quiet courtyard or on a rooftop terrace.
- Afternoon: rest at your riad during the hottest hours, or relax in a traditional hammam.
- Evening: return to Jemaa el-Fnaa at sunset, when the food stalls open and the square fills with musicians and storytellers.
Day 2: Palaces, gardens and the new town
The second day is for Marrakech’s historic monuments and its green spaces, which offer a calm contrast to the busy souks.
- Morning: the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs, both best visited early to avoid the crowds.
- Midday: the ruins of the El Badi Palace, with its large courtyard and views over the city from the walls.
- Afternoon: head to Gueliz, the modern district, for the Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Book tickets in advance in busy seasons.
- Evening: have dinner at a rooftop restaurant, or try a traditional Moroccan meal with tagine, couscous or pastilla.

Day 3: A day trip outside the city
On the last day, leave the city for a change of scenery. Here are three popular options.
- Agafay desert (about 1 hour): a stony desert with camel rides, quad biking, a sunset and dinner at a camp. See our Agafay desert guide.
- Atlas Mountains (about 1 to 2 hours): green valleys, Berber villages and gentle hikes, especially pleasant in summer.
- Essaouira (about 2.5 to 3 hours): a relaxed Atlantic port with ramparts, a fishing harbor and fresh seafood, better with an overnight stay.

Where to stay
A riad in the medina gives you the classic Marrakech experience, with a courtyard, a rooftop and the old city on your doorstep. If you prefer modern comforts and easier parking, look at hotels in Gueliz or Hivernage. Many riads are in narrow lanes, so ask for walking directions or a pick-up from the nearest gate.
Practical tips
- Dress modestly in the medina, with light clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
- Use petit taxis with the meter, and agree on the price in advance for grand taxis.
- Be polite but firm with people offering to guide you, and use a licensed guide if you want local insight.
- Carry small notes and coins for tips, taxis and the souks.
- Check the season before you book: read our guide on the best time to visit Morocco.
