Best Time to Visit Morocco: A Season-by-Season Guide
When is the best time to visit Morocco? Spring and autumn suit most trips. See what each season means for Marrakech, the Sahara, Agadir and the Atlas Mountains.
Short answer: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for most trips to Morocco. The weather is comfortable for the cities, the mountains and the desert, and you can combine several regions in one journey. But Morocco is a varied country, with a Mediterranean north, an Atlantic coast, high mountains and the Sahara in the south, so the best time also depends on where you are going and what you want to do.

This guide walks you through every season, month by month and region by region, so you can pick your dates with confidence. You will also find notes on crowds, festivals, Ramadan, what to pack and the mistakes travelers make most often.
The short version
| Season | Weather | Best for | Keep in mind |

Morocco by season
Spring (March to May)
Days are mild and the countryside is green, especially in the Atlas valleys. It is a great time for Marrakech, the Agafay desert and trekking. Nights can still be cool in the desert and in the mountains, so pack a warm layer.
Spring is also one of the busiest periods, particularly around Easter and school holidays, so it is worth booking your accommodation and any desert camp in advance. By May the heat starts to build in the south, so the Sahara is better in March and April.
Summer (June to August)
Inland Morocco is hot. Marrakech and the Sahara regularly see very high temperatures, so sightseeing works best early in the morning and in the evening. The Atlantic coast, including Agadir and Essaouira, is much more comfortable, which makes summer a good season for beach time.

If you travel in summer, plan a slow rhythm: sightsee early, rest in the middle of the day, and enjoy the evenings when the cities come alive. August is also the main holiday month for Moroccan families and the diaspora, so the coast can be busy.
Autumn (September to November)
Warm, settled weather returns. September can still be hot inland, while October and November are pleasant for the cities and for desert trips. It is a popular time for the Sahara, with nights in a desert camp under clear skies.

Autumn is a great all-round choice if you want to combine a city, the mountains and the desert in the same trip. Evenings start to cool down in November, so bring a light jacket.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is mild on the coast and in the cities during the day, with cool evenings. Desert nights can get very cold, and snow often covers the High Atlas peaks, so it is a good season for mountain scenery. Pack layers.

Winter is quieter than spring and autumn in many places, apart from Christmas and New Year, when Marrakech fills up. When there is enough snow, the Oukaimeden resort near Marrakech opens for skiing.
Month by month
- January: cool and sometimes rainy, with cold desert nights and snow in the High Atlas. Quiet in most places.
- February: still cool, but the days start to brighten. Around Tafraoute, in the Anti-Atlas, the almond trees usually bloom this month.
- March: spring arrives. The countryside is green and the weather is comfortable for cities and trekking.
- April: one of the best months overall. Warm days, mild evenings and good conditions for the Sahara and the Agafay desert.
- May: getting warmer. The Rose Festival in the Dades valley, around Kelaat M’Gouna, usually takes place this month.
- June: hot inland. The coast is pleasant, and the Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira usually takes place around this time.
- July: the hottest month inland. Choose the coast, or plan early-morning and evening activities.
- August: hot inland and busy on the coast with holidaymakers.
- September: still warm to hot inland, with the heat easing toward the end of the month.
- October: a very good month. Warm days, comfortable evenings and clear skies.
- November: pleasant days and cooler nights. Good for cities and desert trips, with fewer crowds.
- December: mild days, cold nights and snow on the peaks. Busy in Marrakech around Christmas and New Year.
Best time to visit by destination
Marrakech and the interior
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable months. Summer days regularly pass 35 degrees Celsius, so plan your visits for the early morning and the evening. Winter days are mild and pleasant, but evenings are cool. See our Marrakech guide.
The Sahara (Merzouga)
October to April gives comfortable days for camel treks and nights in a camp. Summer is very hot, and winter nights are cold, sometimes close to freezing, so pack warm clothes. The Sahara is far from Marrakech, so plan at least two to three days. See our Merzouga guide.
Agafay desert
A good option near Marrakech for sunsets and camp evenings, especially in spring and autumn. Summer afternoons are very hot, so choose an evening visit. See our Agafay desert guide.
Agadir and the Atlantic coast
Mild all year, with the best beach days from late spring to early autumn. Winter days are often pleasant too, around 20 degrees Celsius, though the sea is cool. See things to do in Agadir.
The Atlas Mountains
Late spring to early autumn for hiking, and winter for snowy views. Weather changes quickly at altitude, so bring layers whatever the season.

The north: Fes and Chefchaouen
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant. Summers are hot in Fes, while winters are cooler and wetter in the north, with more rain in the mountains around Chefchaouen.

Crowds, prices and festivals
The busiest periods are spring, autumn and the Christmas and New Year weeks, especially in Marrakech. Summer is quieter inland because of the heat, and January and February are generally calm. Traveling just outside the peak months, such as early March, late October or November, often gives you good weather with fewer crowds.
If you like festivals, look at the Rose Festival in the Dades valley in May, the Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira around June, and the almond blossom near Tafraoute in February. Dates change from year to year, so check them before you book.
A note about Ramadan
The dates of Ramadan move about ten days earlier each year. Morocco remains welcoming, but opening hours of some restaurants and shops change during the day, and evenings are lively once the fast is broken. If you are traveling in this period, let us know and we will plan around it. Be discreet when eating or drinking in public during the day, out of respect.
What to pack by season
- Spring and autumn: light clothes for the day, a warm layer for the evening, comfortable walking shoes.
- Summer: breathable clothes, a hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and a reusable water bottle.
- Winter: layers, a warm jacket for the mountains and the desert at night, and a light rain jacket for the north.
- All year: modest clothing for the cities and the medina, comfortable shoes for cobbled streets, and a scarf for sun, dust or wind.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking the Sahara in July or August: daytime heat can be intense. Choose a cooler month, or a short evening in Agafay.
- Underestimating desert nights: the temperature drops a lot after sunset, even after a warm day.
- Packing the itinerary too tightly: distances are long, and mountain roads are slow. Leave time to enjoy each place.
- Forgetting to book ahead in peak weeks: riads and desert camps fill up around Easter, in autumn and at New Year.
